The 5th Live London Challenge for King of the Beats came to life. The challenge started one week earlier with the pre-event Challenge, three contenders was at the Notting Hill area of London and one was in Central Birmingham (The Diskery) for diggin new beats to sample at the record shops in both areas.
The contenders were:
Lewis Ekspress from the Malverns in Worcestershire the youngest contender so far for King of the beats. He brought a total of two records. His occupation is a music tech student.
Cocktail Mixer the first ever woman contender for King of the Beats. She is from London and runs and event called "Beat Shed"
Danny Spice, a London based emcee and producer. Very much into the diggin culture and hardware equipment. He brought two records of the same drum break so no one else can access this
and finally
Red Eye Rob he is representing from London originally from Portugal.
While the digging was taking place at Notting Hill area of London, I was elsewhere distributing promotional flyers at Camden and the West End of London.
On the event day itself all the preparations was in place till the big event starts. The event had a special feature to coincide the launch of the King of the Beats records release which featured former King of the Beats challenge winners D'lux Beats, Jay King and Mack One. Copies was sold on the night with that purchase each person received a raffle ticket for a draw to someone to win the specially created large illustration artwork of the Late Jay Dilla on a large canvas. On the night a special gift was presented to D'lux Beats, Jay King and Mack One aka Benny ill mentioned a specially framed King of Beats released record.
Live freestyle sessions including hosted by Sparkii Skii and tha 4orce featured several emcees including Madflow from Birmingham. Plus a special beatbox session from Chase.
Providing the mix through the night was from Deejay Random and Devastate.
Then Sparkii Skii presented "The Original Beat Challenge"
After a week of diggin, each contender Cocktail Mixer, Danny Spice and Red Eye Rob presented live on stage and to the crowds their produced beats from the records they brought.
Unfortunately Lewis Ekspress was unable to attend and was not part of the challenge on the night.
After a brief discussion from the judging panel a decision was made and the winner of the 5th King of the Beats Live London challenge is Danny Spice from London.
The King of the Beats live challenges are evolving internationally as an event will reach New York City for the first time and will take place in October.
Meanwhile in the UK the next event will be in Late November 2010.
